Yet another Dreamgirl will be joining the cast of The Color Purple. Jennifer Holliday will take on the role of Shug Avery, the charismatic blues singer, in the revival of the musical on October 4. Holliday won a Tony for her blazing performance as Effie White in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls. Ironically, Shug was first played in this production by Jennifer Hudson who won an Oscar for her Effie in the movie version of Dreamgirls. Hudson was succeeded in Purple by another Tony winner Heather Headley (Aida) who will play her final performance on October 2. Holliday had previously played Sofia in a touring version of Purple.
